Fit beats everything

A €20 tee that fits beats a €200 one that doesn't. Shoulders, hems and breaks — the three checks that matter.

Fit is the highest-leverage variable in dressing well — more than brand, price or trend. The eye reads silhouette before it reads anything else.

The three checks

Shoulder seams should sit at the edge of your shoulders (jackets and shirts are hardest to alter there). Hems should end on purpose — at the waist, mid-hip, or cropped, not accidentally in between. Trousers should 'break' once or not at all on the shoe.

Oversized is a fit, not a size

Deliberately oversized works when one dimension stays controlled — a baggy tee over tailored trousers, wide-leg pants under a fitted top. Oversized everywhere reads as lost in the clothes.

Befriend a tailor

€10–20 of alterations turns 'almost' into 'made for you'. Buy for your biggest dimension and tailor the rest — it's the oldest trick of well-dressed people at every budget.
