Layering is the difference between surviving the weather and styling it. The rules are mechanical, which means anyone can learn them.

Thin to thick, in order

Lightest fabric closest to the body, heaviest outside: tee → shirt or fine knit → jacket or coat. Each layer should be removable without breaking the outfit underneath.

Vary lengths and textures

Layers read best when they're visible: a shirt hem under a cropped jacket, a longline coat over everything. Mixing textures — knit on denim on wool — adds depth even in one color family.

One hero

Pick a single statement layer (the coat, the chunky knit) and keep the rest quiet. Two heroes compete; three is a costume.
